Data Warehouse Consultants SESIdw deliver BI solution for national education foundation

Founded in 1994 and based in San Francisco’s Financial District, the foundation is a national network of schools across 20 states serving over 27,000 students. In 2007 the foundation launched an aggressive program to gather and track performance data in order to provide the best possible decision making criteria to administrators, as well as identifying critical success factors and best practices.

The program was expanded in 2009 to include regional views and a BI system was developed in 2010 consisting of an Microsoft SharePoint website, ETL tools, dashboards and a data warehouse. Additional dashboards were added later, but the system still lacked the ability to integrate external survey metrics, as well as the granularity needed for student level data views.

Enter Strategic Enterprise Solutions, Inc. (SESIdw), a San Francisco based IT consulting firm and Certified Microsoft Partner with over 15 years of Database Warehousing, Business Intelligence and Systems Integration experience.

SESIdw was selected by the foundation to build version 2 of the BI system and according to Sasha Froyland, Managing Partner of SESIdw “One of our biggest challenges was to develop the functionality and data elements required in version 2 while ensuring backward compatibility with the original data warehouse and existing dashboards.” In addition to the data warehouse expansion, the foundation decided to replace existing SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) reports with reporting from Tableau Software, a web-based analytics and BI platform, in order to improve usability, interactivity and the speed of deployment.

“As a certified Tableau partner,” Sasha explains, “Tableau’s rapid-fire business intelligence analytics and its ability to effortlessly combine multiple data sources with a single click, is the perfect solution to meet all of the foundation’s requirements.”  Sasha goes on to state, “Tableau’s seamless integration with the existing infrastructure enables us to build new functionality while maintaining compatibility with the original data warehouse.”

SESIdw’s extensive background in technologies such as SQL Server, SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS), SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), Tableau Software, assorted ETL Tools and data modeling enabled them to process and merge the external statistical data while still maintaining the integrity of the existing data warehouse and dashboards. Combined with SESIdw’s use of Agile development methodologies, the BI project was completed within budget and on schedule, meeting the foundations’ needs at the school, regional and national reporting levels.

Sasha sums it all up by saying, “This is an important program to prepare students from underserved communities for success in college and in life, and we’re very proud to contribute to the overall effectiveness of the program by providing the critical tools needed for the school and foundation administrators to achieve their goals.”
